Going camping can be a great way of relaxing and escaping the hustles of everyday life. There are many things you can enjoy doing with your family in the great outdoors from fishing, hiking or even taking a leisurely nature walk. One of the drawbacks of a camping trip, is that it leaves the people camping at the mercy of the elements in many ways thus limiting how much you can enjoy your break.
This is truer when it comes to cooking when outdoors. However, you can work around the drawbacks so that you enjoy your cooking experience while camping. These ideas will help you next time you decide to go out camping.
Plan what you will cook and eat while at the camp
If you want to savor the best of meals while camping, it’s important to plan ahead of time. Consider not only the type of foods you will carry with you to the outdoors but also the way they will be packaged from home. Often, canned foods come as the first choice because they are easy to store and do not spoil quickly.
Packed foods like potato chips or dehydrated foods are also an excellent choice. Although you can survive with such packaged foods the entire camp period, I wouldn’t recommend that. You will not enjoy your stay if you choose to feed on this the whole time.
Fresh meat, fresh fruits as well as fresh fish caught when camping will make your camping meals better.
Be creative and come up with makeshift refrigeration facilities
If you are camping close to a small river, take advantage of it. Choose a spot where the current won’t sweep your food downstream. The best place should be a shallow and natural inlet which can be enclosed with rocks. Food should be put in an airtight plastic container, which is weighted in place in the water. This ensures your food remains fresh.
Storing raw meat properly while camping
When camping, always remember that raw meat should be stored away from all other foodstuffs. Before heading outdoors, you can vacuum pack your meats or wrap them properly in plastic bags. Where possible, you can store them in a different cool box.
Fresh veggies and fruits
Foods that are usually refrigerated such as some vegetables and fruits should be kept away from direct sunlight. You can keep them in your tent as long as it’s well ventilated. You need to be careful as you may have problems with animals looking for food so be careful with this.
Check your Food Regularly
When out camping, it’s paramount to keep checking your food every day even if you will not use them immediately. The water flow levels in the stream you stored your food may have changed, and varying temperatures may interfere with your food. If you take proper care of your food in the camp, you can store it for as long as you would at home.
What to bring along for cooking
Rather than making a campfire, I’d suggest you bring a camping stove. Camping stoves are small and easy to control than building a campfire. A lot of campers prefer aluminum pots and pans since they are easier to carry than stainless steel and are good conductors of heat. Bring a frying pan, a coffee pot, a stew pot and lid, and a can opener.
Don’t carry a lot of eating utensils at the camp. The last thing you want to deal with after enjoying a camp meal is a bucket full of dirty dishes. A lot of food cooked in the camp can be eaten with the fingers, but there are those you will require a spoon, fork, and knife. You can try some cheap disposable cutlery and plates and save yourself from washing dishes.

Swimming is an endurance sport that relies on proper dietary habits to fuel them. However, these nutrition needs are always in flux. For one to achieve optimal nutrition for the sport, a swimmer needs to know what types of food to eat. This article seeks to try and explain how a swimmer can attain optimal nutrition for the sport:
Basic nutrition needs for swimmers
Some people used to think that simply because they have the best pool ever and they have put top quality vacuum pool cleaners they are good to go; thinking that any swimmer who gets into that water will be good to go, but that is not true even if you purchase an automatic pool cleaner to get rid of all the debris in the pool, much needs to be done on the swimmer. As with other athletes, swimmers nutrition involves a combination of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Protein is important for muscle repair and development, carbohydrates offer energy for high intensity exercise, and fats provides energy for extended endurance during swimming. The three offers energy and muscular needs of a swimmer. For this reason, experts recommend swimmers diet to have 60% calories and should come from carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 25% fat.
However, these numbers can vary significantly depending on one’s training needs of a particular training period.
Nutrition for swimmers is not only restricted to those who compete, even if you are just a fan of swimming, you can check your nutrition to get optimal experience when in the water. Make sure you consume the right food and fluid before and after swimming as this will maximize their performance.
Sports nutrition is developing rapidly with plenty of research being produced every year. While there are recommended guidelines, every athlete is an individual and so these guidelines may need to be adjusted.
With proper strategies when it comes to diet, an athlete will be able to stay healthy and fit for the activity. However, to make sure that you have the right diet, you can consult a nutritionist to be able to gain maximum results.
Even though all swimmers have energy requirement for their training and competition needs, if you train a young person and most especially adolescent boys or girls, you need to understand that they have an additional requirement for growth and development.
Elite swimmers take high quality supplements on top of a nutritious diet that usually include vegetables, nuts, fruits, and organic meat. If you are training heavily in more than 2 hours a day, you need to eat 5-7 light meals a day. This is because eating a heavy meal in one sitting may slow your pace and make you feel heavy for the rest of the day. A swimmer can consume several thousands of calories a day than an average person and most especially if they train for more than six hours.
Well, there you have it. If you love swimming or you consider being a swimming champion, know that diet is very important when it comes to performance. Just make god use of the above information and you will be good to go.

Spices that come in their complete can may retain their taste for 3 to 5 years. For you to enjoy all these, you need to store them well. This pre-school teacher used to store her herbs and spices anyhow and so she could always complain of how her spices are not adding any flavor to the food, until she realized it was her fault that she was storing them badly.
Prepare foods in advance
To cook effectively, you need to prepare as much as you can in advance. This means that you need to have all preparations functions done before you begin cooking. Use seasoning and spices to improve on your food’s taste
Many people think that spices and seasoning works best only on meat. You can use them in any food stuffs besides meat and still get that awesome taste. With a bone, the meat cooks faster since the bone quickens the cooking procedure by distributing heat to the meat. This way your food will be ready within no time.

Before I took time to train myself on healthy dishes, getting my kids to eat healthy was a challenge; it is still challenging to some parents. While many kids prefer pizza, macaroni, and cheese, parents are hoping their kids will agree to eat grilled chicken and vegetables. Unfortunately, if kids dislike something, they will not eat it.
Parents have the responsibility to get their children to eat healthy while at the same time making sure they are getting enough to eat. While fast foods may be an easier option, it is not a healthy one and so it should be avoided at all costs. Just like awesomely made fake eyelashes are meant to make you look stunningly beautiful, the same way healthy foods will allow your child to get the required vitamins so that they can stay healthy and prevent chances of obesity. Here are options for a healthy dinner option for your child:
1. Honey-Ginger Chicken Bites
Instead of fried chicken fingers, you can try honey-ginger chicken bites. Children will love the sweet glaze flavor. They’re also small in size which is nice for a bite-sized treat for your kids. This recipe is also easy and fast to make and even if you have a busy line of work like truck driving where you earn lots of money, within no time you will have made healthy dinner for your child before you hit the road.
- 1 tbsp grated orange rind
- 2 tbsp cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Then add the chicken and shake together before putting it in the refrigerator for about 2 hours. After that, add salt and pepper on the chicken and bake for about 20 minutes. Squeeze marinade in a bowl via a sieve and discard the solids. Put the sol8ution in a sauce pan and bring it to boil. Mix the water and cornstarch in a small bowl and add it top the pan. Add the glaze to the chicken and boil for 5 minutes. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and serve when warm. Your kids will really love this.
2. Dinner meat loaf muffins
- Olive oil
- Dried oregano
- Minced garlic
- ½ cup of ketchup
This is kid’s favorite because it is basically a meatball. All you need is to mold the meat into tiny muffins and your kid will definitely love the look of it. You just need to chop onions finely and cut carrots into small pieces and put it into the meat and it will increase fiber and antioxidants. Cook with lean ground beef. As you begin to cook, heat olive oil in a skillet and add onion, carrot, minced garlic, and dried oregano. Then add ½ cup of ketchup and then bake.
3. Sliders with shallot-Dijon Relish
- ½ tbsp salt
- 1 pound ground sirloin
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper

Grill each side for about 3 minutes and then mix 3 tbsp finely chopped shallots with 1 tbsp Worcestershire, 1 tbsp Dijon mustard softened butter and spread this over 8, 1 ounce Parker house rolls that are cut in half. Place the patty on the 2 pickle chips and add the top half of the roll.
While kids are known to not like healthy dinners, you can make some of their favorite meals into healthy ingredients. Just try the above recipes and your child will not eve n realize how healthy the dinner was tonight. That is why I never complain of my kids not loving healthy foods.

For some people, it is hard to believe that all beers are not created equally. This must be so because individuals have varying tastes and preferences, but some people would like a range of beers and flavor profiles. I have been a chef for the last 10 years, and in this article I wish to share my thoughts on beer and food. Some beers are great to drink with some friends in the pub but there are those that go well with Pizza, or Italian food. But how do you know which beer goes with which food? Do you think there is beer and food pairing rules just like there is with wine? This article will help you know how to order your beer when eating for example a chicken.
In the past, wine experts set all kinds of rules on which wine to drink with which food and anyone who did it differently was seen as uneducated. However, in the recent years, the old snobby way of thinking was thrown away and now people are being told to drink any type of wine with any food, without having to worry about the pairings held forth by the so-called experts. In fact, I nowadays serve people food and they pair it with any type of wine. The same thing goes with beer brands. You can drink your favorite whiskey brand with whatever you want to eat without worrying about the rules.
Your taste might be a little bit different from your mates and so you need to decide on your own. There is this man who I served in my restaurant. He knew so many types of beer that others didn’t know, but he told us that he had subscribed to scotch club where he could taste beers from all over the world before others did. What he wasn’t sure of is which food to pair with the drinks. I told him he can order anything, and after eating I did not hear him complain.
Beer styles are so varied with different tastes and there can be millions of choices that will work. Also, when it comes to food, there are numerous of foods that can be paired with beers. The good news for food and beer lovers is that you can freely experiment for the rest of your life. Just imagine the possibilities of eating food with a certain type of beer and have a go.
When it comes to food pairing and beer styles, the basic rule of thumb is that the stronger the taste of the beer brand, the stronger the flavor of the food needs to be. The lighter the food, the less strong the beer should be. Just think of the flavor of each beer and see if you can pick a dish out of that which might go well with your favorite chef prepared meal. Try them and see how it goes. It does not have to be a hard work but it is something that you and your friends can do together and you don’t all have to agree. Everyone can be right.
Just pair the food with the beer you like and experiment. Pairing beer and food does not have to be work; it is supposed to be fun!

Microwave cooking is the most convenience way to cook however, learning the right technique makes you a better microwave cook. This article seeks to give you tips on how you can make the best meal with a microwave.
Choose recipes the right away
Choose the recipes that are cooked by moisture-boiling, steaming, raising, and blanching foods that require fat and oil for a change or flavor are not as successful with dip frying being impossible at all. Whether you are cooking for your family or your pets, you can easily do so with the use of a microwave. You do not have to worry about cooking for your dogs that are small-sized; you can easily make their foods with a microwave. Medium sized dogs’ food can also be made with a microwave.
When it comes to browning, foods do not readily get row in the microwave, but you can follow the following tips:
Fat usually absorb heat and if you happen to remove foil covering meat portions that are fatty and they will crisp and row lightly.
Baste with oil to give a better crisp to roast. Oil usually increases temperature of the meat surface. If a browning dish is pre-heated it will row your dish beautifully if you press the food down so that all the surfaces make contract with the base of the dish.
Soy sauce is a great browning agent
Wok-aroma-In traditional stir-fried dishes sauces can be sprinkled around the side of a hot wok. In the microwave, put the sauce first and give it time to absorb heat and also to release the aroma.
Arranging foods-whether defrosting, freezing, or cooking, foods need to be arranged to take advantage of microwave values of microwave cooking. Keep the following tips in mind:
Microwave cooking is greater at the edges than at the center. For this, you need to place pieces of food at the edge of ay container. They are equally sized, thicker portions needs to be placed at the edge or at the corners of square containers since they will be able to cook faster than their portions in the center. Foods cook faster in hot spots and so you need to place large portions or containers of meat in this place.
Single layer of food cooks evenly- a large lamp cooks first at the edge. Therefore, freeze in single layers and you need not to overlap food if possible.
Raise large portions of roast or a rack for an even distribution of meat. When meat is heated, fat melts to the bottom and this area absorbs heat more.
Cover-by covering the food; you will prevent foods from drying of some dishes. The most common cover is plastic wrap or cling wrap. As pressure is built up within a fully enclosed container, the food will come out best. However, you do not need at any time to cover the food loosely or leave a gap where steam will escape.
Shielding food-this part needs to be shielded with foil to avoid overcooking as well as drying out. What you need is to ensure that the foil does not touch the sides of an oven.
Food ski-food with a membrane or skin such as liver, fish, or tomato, if they are to be left whole should be pierced or slit to leave a steam vent.
Well, there you have it. If you have been wondering how to make your meals with a microwave, follow the above tips ad make your family happy.

Vegetable dehydration can be dated back to thousands of years ago where people hydrated vegetables for preservation purposes. In the modern days, dehydrated vegetable (more information available at inmykitch.org). are low fat alternative and delicious snack to majority of people. You can also use dehydrated vegetables in soups and other meals without having to rush to the market to get fresh vegetables.
Why dehydrated vegetables?
Some of the reasons as to why you should opt for dehydrated vegetables are portability, emergency preparedness, long shelf-life, and easy storage. Cooking dehydrated vegetables is much like cooking fresh vegetables, with just a few steps added. Below are the steps for cooking these dries veges from a friend of mine who is also a restaurant cook.
Tips on how to cook dehydrated vegetables:
Step 1: assemble all the vegetables that you wish to cook and put them in a bowl. In case you are going to prepare numerous types of vegetables, arrange them according to size in different bowls. This is because similar sized vegetables call for equal cooking time. If you put different sized-vegetables in the same bowl, you will find that some are not cooked evenly.
Step 2: boil 2 cups of water for every cup of these vegetables that you plan to cook.
Step 3: pour the boiled water over the dried vegetables to soak them. This process is termed as reconstituting the vegetables. The boiled water will be absorbed by these vegetables, thus getting them back to their pre-dehydrated appearance.
Step 4: leave the vegetables in water for some minutes until they return to their normal appearance. They usually take 15 minutes to 3 hours to reconstitute, depending on the type and size of the vegetable. For example, small diced vegetables can take only 20 minutes to reconstitute.
Step 5: get the vegetable out of the water and confirm if they are at a desired consistency. They should feel soft when squeezed.
Step 6: now, add the vegetables to a pan and season them to taste. You can season them with pepper, salt, and parsley which typically tastes great when mixed with vegetables. You can add the dish to any dish that you can use fresh vegetables on.
Examples on how to cook dehydrated vegetables:
Even though corn needs more soak time compared to other vegetables, when you rehydrate it, it returns to an almost fresh condition, both when it comes to taste and appearance. To get a tasty dried corn, boil 4 cups of water and add one dehydrated sweet corn and allow it to soak for 20 minutes. Simmer it for 30 to 1 hour or until it is tender. Then you can add seasoning to taste.
Dehydrated potatoes are usually found as flakes which are crucial for thickening stew or soup. You can use dehydrated potatoes on soups or stew, or dehydrate them to cook them as potatoes that are scalloped. If you want to fry these potatoes, you can soak them or boil them until dehydrated.
You can make your own powder by grinding pieces of dried vegetables in a blender or food mill. Then, use this vegetable powder as flavorings or use them to thicken stews or soups. For example, you can reform tomato powder to different textures to use it for different purposes. You can make it thick to be used as tomato paste. You can even make a mixture of dried herbs into your tomato powder and make spaghetti or pizza sauce powder.
Instead of snacking on highly processed and potentially unhealthy food, you can try the jerky vegetables that you made on your own. Using dehydrated vegetables by adding them to your soup or stew can be a great way to increase the number of vitamin-loaded foods in your diet and you will a fit and healthy life.

I love to share cooking tips and things I see at my restaurant, but today I’d like to share something different. It’s still about food and cooking, but it’s for my (and your) dog. If you have know anything about dog food, here is a good site for you to get start.
Want to feed your dog the best but can’t afford to buy all those expensive organic pet brands? No problem! There are plenty of do-it-yourself meals and treats that you could try in order to ensure that your dog gets all the vitamins and minerals that he needs.
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food)
This diet is basically feeding your dog raw food—similar to what canines eat in the wild. Uncooked meat is mostly what this diet consists off (Around 70% of it). Cooking meat usually causes plenty of the nutrients that your dog needs to deplete, so raw meat is beneficial for them as long as it is properly cleaned. Beef, Chicken and Fish are the usual ingredients, but make sure to remove the small bones that can get lodged into their throats or stomachs. The other 30% consists of vegetables like carrots, broccoli and cabbage. If you want to do raw feeding on your dog, make sure that you research on the best ingredients and the best ways to mix and feed them.
If you are uncomfortable with the idea of feeding your dog raw meat, you can always turn to Organic food. Here are a couple of recipes that you can try:
4 cups of water
1 pound of ground chicken
2 cups of rice
1 cup of chopped carrots
- Cook de-boned chicken until pinkness disappears. Use oil with low fat content.
- Boil the chicken, rice and water in a large pot until the rice is soft
- Add the carrots and cook until the vegetables are quite tender
- Cool, and then serve!
½ cup of water or oil
1 pound of beef
1 sweet potato
1 cup of chopped carrots
- Cook sweet potato until tender, then chop up
- Cook the beef until it is well done
- Add the sweet potato and carrots and cook until carrots are tender
- Cool, then serve!
Instead of buying, you can just make your own and your dog will love it all the same! Here is one idea that you start with when making your own dog treats:
PEANUT BUTTER BISCUITS
As we all know, dogs LOVE peanut butter. Here is a recipe that could make your dog follow your commands all day, everyday!
1/3 cup of peanut butter
2 cups of flour
1 ½ cups of water
1 tablespoon of honey
1 cup of rolled oats
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees farenheit
- Mix flour and oats
- Pour in one cup of water and mix ingredients
- Add peanut butter and honey and mix again thoroughly
- Add ½ cup of water until mixture is dough-like
- Roll the dough to make a ¼ inch sheet
- Use a cookie cutter then place them on a baking sheet

I am a professional chef, and to me, cooking is not just a job but my passion. However, just like anything else in the world, one needs to take a break. The memory of a strong trout landed or a fine deer dropped can drive anyone back to a special place in the wilderness. However, a memory of a buck moving out of a range at the last moment, or a rainbow busting out in the rocks can be a heartbreaking memory. At times, it is the memory of the land that calls us back; desiring to walk the trails, go hiking, or camp in the woods. We just want to be in the wild.
Escape Into The Wild
I did some walking and wild camping on the first week of March this year. I badly needed to take a break from my daily routine and get out to the wild. I had not done this for years and so I felt it was time to do so. My wife could see that I needed a break and so she was encouraging me take a break.
Camping With Friends
I often went for walks with friends, but there is something incredibly different; relaxing and peaceful when you go out with no one else, but your dog. Tommy (my dog) is my best friend and so I could not leave without him. To be honest, without him, I would probably have found my trip quit boring, but with him it turned out to be fantastic.
A Camping Knife Is The Best Wild Survival Gear
Having a camping knife on the best is a second nature for every camper. When out in the woods or in the wilds, everyone needs a sturdy main blade.
I realized that a good knife is very necessary when out in the wilds. I used mine in almost every activity. Upon arriving, I found it hard to pitch my tent, but my camping knife helped me a lot for I was able to pitch my tent successfully. I used it in numerous activities, from string to cheese, shaving for tinder or making fuzz strings, clearing small bushes and host of other things. While you may think that any knife can be the best, you should know that a survival knife should help you survive.
Over the years, I used to think that survival knifes were not important but I have now changed my perception for the better. An ultimate survival knife should be light weight, easy to conceal, for it to do the job that it was intended to do. I found it amazing for I found out that it ca n be adaptable to any situation. The one that I brought with me was tough, durable and easy to sharpen.
I needed to make my own kayak and make arrowheads to harvest in the seashore. With the use of a camping survival knife, the task was so easy. I found skinning an animal to roast it easy with the knife.
I loved making my meals in a different way
Even though I am a chef, the aim of my trip was to take a break from my daily routine (cooking), and so to avoid it, at first I used to snack a lot. However, I was tempted to horn my skills by trying something different in the wild, and so for the first time, I made my own GORP mix. This mix consisted of honey, peanuts, smoked and roasted almond, macadamia nuts, cashew nuts, chocolate drops, and mini hob nobd.
The experience was really great as I went back with a new recipe. At times, I could hunt down an antelope, skin it and roast it. My favorite activity was fishing; the knife really helped me for I could easily catch a fish on a shallow surface and roast it. Wild cooking was easy and fun, much better compared to having to cut up and spread salami, cheese or even pate.
The trip was incredibly awesome and was probably my favorite to date. The weather was glorious and I had no one to bother me. I and my dog had a great time.

To most restaurant owners, food safety is our top priority. But sometimes the hair from server or cook can fall into the plate. This is one of the most awkward situations you can find yourself in. However, with the right actions, you can handle the situation and get the restaurant to pay for their negligence in the preparation and serving of the food.
Hair Makes Food Unhealthy
Hair in food is as unhealthy as it gets. Although there are other foreign objects found in restaurant foods that are more disgusting, hair is particularly unhealthy. The shampoo and/ or conditioner in the hair contain chemicals which, if digested, can cause health complications such as stomach upsets. You can check this website for information on different shampoos, conditioners, and the chemicals in them.
Complications Resulting from Hair in Food
Additionally, hair found in food has led to major surgery, punctured organs and food poisoning (from the chemical composition of the shampoos and conditioners that were used on the hair before it found its way to your food).
If you ever find yourself asking, “what do you do if you find a hair in restaurant food?” then you are probably in a precarious situation. Experts recommend a number of options that you can adopt, including:
1. Notify the Server
When you find a piece of hair in your restaurant food, the first thing you need to do is to call the server and inform them about it.
2. Keep the Evidence
You should keep the evidence with you, even if they insist on taking the food back to the restaurant kitchen. The evidence should include the hair you found, the receipt for the food, the packaging it came in and the food that you left over when you found the hair.
This is because, when the right comes, the food may need to be tested for pathogens. Your lawyers, when you choose to sue, will also use it as evidence in a court of law.
3. Get Treated
In case the hair makes you sick or hurts your internal organs, you need to seek medical attention. The sooner you do this, the easier it will be to treat any condition before it gets out of hand.
You should also take photos of the food and any injuries you sustained as a result of finding (and accidentally eating) the hair in the food. Added to this, it would be useful if you kept good records of any medical bills that you get on account of seeking treatment after the ordeal.
5. Hire a Lawyer
The biggest mistake you can make is to wait while determining whether you need a lawyer in this situation. You should not fall into this trap. Most restaurants will apologize and try to alleviate the situation by promising you that they will look into the matter.
However, with legal representation, you can choose to sue the restaurant especially if they are not serious about the matter. Use the above advice to know what to do in case you ever find yourself asking, what do you do if you find a hair in restaurant food.’
